I was surprised to read about a new type of treatment called helminthic therapy where parasitic worms (whipworms) are actually injected into a person to infect them in the hopes it will get rid of UC. It seems we in the western world have become so efficient at elminating bactieria and pathogens from our water supply that the lack of stimulation to our immune system causes our defenses to go into overdrive and could be a cause of Ulcerative Colitis. By inserting these parasites into our systems it gives our digestive protection system something to sink its proverbial teeth into, evidently taking its mind off attacking the colon. So far testing is in its early stages and safety aspects are being looked at. . One study saw improvements in 35% UC subjects.
